Glass, a natural product with remarkable properties

Glass is a natural, mineral material manufactured from three basic raw materials found in nature: Silicon oxide (SiO2), the primary raw material, derived from sand. Sand extraction in Mol is a well-known example. Sodium oxide (Na2O), sodium carbonate, extracted from sea salts and lime.

Glass is a natural, mineral material manufactured from three basic raw materials found in nature:

  • Silicon oxide (SiO2), the primary raw material, derived from sand. Sand extraction in Mol is a well-known example.
  • Sodium oxide (Na2O), sodium carbonate, extracted from sea salts and limestone via the Solvay process.
  • Calcium oxide (CaO), derived from the decomposition of limestone or dolomite.

Furthermore, glass is exceptionally recyclable. Up to 90% recycled crushed glass can be added to these natural raw materials. Consequently, the use of one ton of glass cullet can replace no less than 850 kg of sand!

The solar-control, insulating, acoustic, and safety qualities of high-quality glazing are also impressive:

  • Highly insulating double or triple glazing, combined with quality profiles, keeps the cold out and the heat in during winter. In summer, solar-control glass ensures the interior remains cool. Insulating glass is an underestimated tool for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and thus combating further global warming.
  • The acoustic qualities of glass often remain overlooked, but double or triple (acoustic) safety glass allows virtually no disturbing noises to penetrate your interior.
  • Glass also provides pleasant natural light in your interior without compromising your privacy.
  • Modern glazing that meets all current standards is extremely safe. Falling through the glass is impossible.
  • Safety glass or burglar-resistant glass also provides excellent protection for your home against break-ins.
  • Aesthetically, glass is indispensable in contemporary architecture. Whether discreet or striking, it is used in both classic and modern, innovative applications.
